Andrew's Trip to Meet Rex Orange County Backstage in LA

December 6, 2024

What motivated you to support Rex’s charity of choice American Foundation for Suicide Prevention?

Honestly, I’ve had my own fair share of mental health struggles, especially in middle/high school. I’m an artist myself, and Rex has always been my biggest influence. I had the chance to see him live when I was 15, just two months before the pandemic, and I’ve leaned on that memory along with the rest of his work like a crutch ever since. His influence on me has given me a sense of direction and purpose, and I’m aware that’s a gift few have found in my generation. As cheesy as it sounds it’s likely I might not be here without that sense of hope. If the money I donated goes towards bringing a fraction of the joy he and his work brings me, then I'm happy.

How was the backstage hang with Rex?

Even better than I ever would’ve imagined. I told him everything from the previous answer; we talked about my music, my life as a college student, we “nerded out” over chord progressions and harmony, and he gave a lot of great advice. He was exceptionally kind and authentic and made sure I didn’t feel rushed or stressed. I’m still processing it all, and weeks later I haven’t come down from the adrenaline. He even took the time to sign all the albums I bought! I think anyone who archives anything can learn from his humility. There’s a big difference between “camera kind” and authentic generosity; he’s definitely the latter.

How was the show?

Brilliant. Although I love the energy of a GA pit at a show, waiting in line for hours often leaves me drained by the time the set starts, so the theatre setting was a nice change. Due to him booking multiple nights at smaller venues, the show was also a lot more intimate and personal than his previous tours. All that combined with the circumstance of meeting him gave me a strong sense of understanding the man behind the project and made me respect him, his resolve, and his affinity for the craft that much more!

I also had the chance to take my mom, who had never been to one of his shows but is a big fan of concerts. It was really nice to get to show her my favourite thing in the world while returning the favour of the many shows she's taken me to. I don’t think a lot of teenagers/young adults tend to share their interests with their parents, so I’m very lucky for the experience.

How did you enjoy your travel to Los Angeles and your hotel stay?

It was great! The staff at the Delphi were extremely kind, especially the lady at the front desk. The location was awesome and walking distance from the venue!

How has this experience impacted you?

It was extremely affirming. I’ve spent the last 5 years writing, recording, and gigging in hopes of sitting in a room with him someday, and now he’s aware of me and my ambitions. Although the timeline of us meeting as peers isn’t any different, I now believe 100% that it’s possible with enough drive and patience.
